UK Sommelier of the Year for Moor Hall’s Alex

Alex Freguin, Moor Hall’s Head Sommelier has been crowned the Taittinger UK Sommelier of the Year.

There were 12 finalists who battled it out at London’s Savoy Hotel on July 16th with Alex getting one of three final spots. The trio then had to complete a set of tasks in front of a live audience including identifying errors on a wine list, undergo blind taste tests of wines and spirits and serve tables of former winners.

Alex was kept on his toes by other northern competition with Northcote Head Sommelier Tamaz Czinki placing second and Pierre Brunelli, beverage and wine manager at the Lake District’s L’Enclume came third. As part of Alex’s prize, he will benefit from a mentoring programme as well as enjoy a trip to Rioja.

Alex said: ‘I’m loving work every day at Moor Hall on the floor. It’s a passion, I’ve worked hard for this and I’m just so pleased it happened for me on the day.’

Despite being open less than 18 months, Moor Hall has already been awarded a Michelin star, was named Best Breakthrough at the British GQ Food and Drink Awards, has four AA Rosettes and was the highest climber in the prestigious National Restaurant Awards list, jumping from 70 to six.
